How to Make a Pattern Copier For Your Woodworking Lathe

Lathe pattern copiers are expensive and are not available for many wood lathes. Pattern copiers are used to make duplicate turned spindles from an original. Here's how to make your own.

Metal Saw

You will need a piece of 1/2 aluminum tubing as long as your lathe bed or a bit longer to make your lathe pattern copier. You will also need some 1/8" thick aluminum sheeting or you can buy some aluminum cookie sheets. Purchase a box of 10-40 bolts 1 1/2" long and a wing nut and washer for every bolt. Buy a second box of 10-40 bolts 1" long with nylon-lined lock nuts for every bolt. You will need (4) 3" angle irons with screws, as well. The rest of the parts for your lathe pattern copier can be made out of any scrap wood you may have laying around the shop.

Metal Saw

The design of this lathe pattern copier incorporates multiple feeler "fingers" suspended behind the lathe along the aluminum pipe. These fingers are adjusted to match the exact depth of the cuts in your original turned spindle. When you place a new spindle blank on the lathe, all of the lathe pattern copier fingers you adjusted will be laying on top of the blank. As you cut into the blank, prepare yourself to stop cutting as soon as the fingers relating to that cut drop down and through the cut.

Make two, vertical support posts about 6" higher than the top of the largest spindle blank you can turn on that lathe. Note the outside diameter of the aluminum pipe and drill a hole of that size near the top of each support post. Mount the posts using the angle irons on the lathe table immediately behind the lathe. Insert the pipe through both holes to make sure it fits. This will help position the aluminum fingers of your lathe pattern copier so that they can reach the spindle you are turning.

Make a bunch of wood blocks 3/4" x 1¼" x 6" long. Drill a pipe sized hole in one end of each of them through the ¾" thickness. With the blocks lying flat, cut through from the end into the hole with a 1/8" table saw blade. With the blocks standing on edge, drill completely through each block between the hole and the end of the block. Use a drill diameter slightly larger that the shaft diameter of the 10-40 bolts. Insert one 1 ½" 10-40 bolt through the hole you just drilled and place a wing nut and washer on the end. The idea is that the wooden blocks will slip onto the pipe and the bolts and wing nuts will hold them in place by closing up the 1/8" cut you made on the table saw.

Drill another bolt hole of the same diameter about 1/2" from the other end of the block, centered with the block laying flat on the drill press table. Cut another 1/8" slot, 1" deep and centered through the 1¼" dimension, at right angle to the bolt hole. Remove one end of the pipe from the vertical support posts. You can now mount the blocks along the pipe before replacing the pipe in the vertical support post of your lathe pattern copier.

Cut aluminum fingers out of the flat stock using a 1/4" blade on the band saw. The fingers should measure 6" long and 3/4" wide. Both ends should be completely rounded (3/8" radius) on an edge, belt or disc sander. Drill a 10-40 bolt hole in one end of each finger centered 1/2" from the end. Sand the fingers smooth, removing saw marks and burrs.

Mount the aluminum fingers onto the ends of the wooden blocks, securing them in place with the 1" 10-40 bolts and lock nuts. The aluminum fingers must be free to move up and down.

Now place your original spindle on the lathe. Set the fingers to just drop through, barely touching the depth of each cut. Place the first blank on the lathe with the fingers you just adjusted resting on top of the spinning blank. Start cutting and stop as each finger falls through.

Complete How to For Creative Pumpkin Carving Using Stencils

Can you imagine Halloween without a funny faced pumpkin on the porch? That's just my point. Pumpkin Carving is the main event that makes it feel like Halloween. And as far as Halloween crafts go, it's most likely the only one that a lot of families make time for. So it's very special not to mention a long time tradition. What's changing is that folks are using stencils to take their Jack O Lantern from a simple toothless face to an ornate scene.

Metal Saw

In this article I'm not only going to tell you how to carve a pumpkin but I'm also going to show you how to use a stencil in the process so that you can create a pumpkin masterpiece that will be the talk of the neighborhood.

Metal Saw

You can find some great printable Halloween stencils on the internet. This makes pumpkin carving easy because you can just print the stencil out and start creating your pumpkin masterpiece. Plus you'll find that some designers have come up with some very creative images. There are more than just funny and scary faces. You'll find cemetery scenes and flying bats or hunch backed cats.

OK! Let's get started. First, here are a few items that you'll need: A Stencil Pattern, Scissors, Tape, A Carving Saw, A Transfer Tool, A Large Spoon or Scoop (You may be able to find the last three tools mentioned in a pumpkin carving kit).

You'll want to match your pumpkin and your stencil design. If you already have a pumpkin that is tall and thin, then find a pattern that will fill in the height and not curve too far around the sides. If you have chosen a pattern that is short and wide, look for a pumpkin that is squat and round. You want your carving to be clearly visible from one direction.

Also, try to find a pumpkin that has a smooth side for your pattern to fit snugly against. This will make it easier to transfer the pattern and carve it.

Allow the pumpkin to sit for a while at room temperature. Draw an outline of a six-sided lid on top of the pumpkin that will be large enough for you to clean out the inside and place a candle. Use a carving saw and cut along the outline with the blade at an angle towards the center of the pumpkin in order to create a ledge to support the lid.

Use a large spoon to clean out the seeds and pulp. Scrape the pulp in the area you plan to carve until the wall is no more then 1 inch thick. If you were able to find the pumpkin carving kit at your local store there is most likely a small plastic scoop enclosed. I would recommend using a larger metal spoon if you have one. The plastic spoon is no match for the seeds and the pulp inside a pumpkin.

Trim the excess paper from your stencil with scissors making sure to leave at least a ½ inch border on all sides for the tape. Line up the pattern and tape both sides of the stencil, top and bottom. To tape the corners, you may need to crease the stencil. Depending on the roundness of the pumpkin, this may distort your design so try to make the creases where the pattern will be the least distorted.

Use the Transfer Tool to make holes along the lines of the design at about 1/8 inch apart. Complex designs might require the holes to be closer together. The tip of the tool should be pushed in just far enough to penetrate the paper stencil and the outer skin of the pumpkin. Don't push so hard that the tool goes through the wall of the pumpkin. Make sure that all the lines have been marked clearly before removing the pattern. If you need help seeing the holes once the pattern is removed, rub flour into them. They'll turn white.

Cradle the pumpkin in your lap, and use the Carving Saw to cut out the design by connecting the dots. Hold the saw like a pencil and cut with a continuous up-and-down motion, keeping the saw perpendicular to the pumpkin. Only use gentle pressure to avoid stressing and breaking the tool or the pumpkin. It's best to start in the center of the design and work your way out. You may need to rotate the pumpkin in your lap to keep the side that you are cutting closer to your hand. To cut sharp corners, remove the saw blade and re-insert it at the new angle. Use your finger to push the cut pieces out from the inside of the pumpkin. Cut large areas into smaller ones for easier removal.

One last thing to do! If you want to put a candle inside the pumpkin you need a chimney in order to allow the heat to escape. When all the carving is done and the inside is clean, smooth and free of loose pulp, place the candle inside and carefully light it. Put the lid in place and let the candle burn for just a couple of minutes. Once the candle smoke has blackened a spot on the lid or top, use the Carving Saw to cut a 1 inch diameter hole at that spot for a chimney.

Oh yeah! Coating the cut edges with petroleum jelly will reduce shriveling and extend the life of your pumpkin by keeping it moist.

Wait! Before you toss out the seeds, you can bake them for a tasty snack. Separate the seeds from the pumpkin strings and pulp. Toss the seeds in a bowl with a little olive oil or melted butter. Place them on a cookie sheet and sprinkle with salt, garlic powder, onion powder, seasoned salt or any other seasoning of your choice (to taste). Bake at 250 degrees for about an hour, stirring every 15 or 10 minutes until they have a golden brown color.

For those of us that want to create art but don't quite have it in us, stencils are a great tool! Now we can see that this rule even relates to pumpkin carving. Sure, it's art that may not last forever, but it's art none the less. I really hope that you enjoy using stencils to create your pumpkin masterpiece this year and that you become open to how using stencils can inspire you to create many other forms of art.

The Four Different Types of Metals and Their Contribution to Metallurgy

The earth is indeed an amazing and perfect place to live. It has the things that are necessary for us to survive. It provides with the enough resources for our needs. There is no place like earth. Humans are the highest level of organism living on this planet. We are even termed as the stewards of this place. Although plants and animals are also considered as living organisms, humans are given the chance and the will to utilize the natural resources that can be found on earth.

Metal Saw

These natural resources include plants, wood and minerals. Metal is one of the oldest minerals on this planet. It has been used in different reasons. During the early civilizations metal has been used as a weapon. It is very much known for its hardness and durability.

Metal Saw

Most of the people nowadays are confused about the properties and functions of metal. Metal is not just actually iron. There are different types of metals that can be found on the surface of the earth and even on its inner core. The different types of metals have their own characteristics and properties.

The most expensive type of metal is gold. Gold has been one of the finest materials used in making jewelries. Gold has become the sign of wealth for most of the people. It could be found on the crust of the earth. The process of extracting gold from ordinary rocks is very difficult. It would take time before you can have it as jewelry. During the early periods the main significance of gold is for decoration. Gold is also very popular to be the most malleable of all the metals.

Next to the value of gold is silver. Silver has been also used as a form of jewelry. It can be made into anklets, bracelets, earrings, necklaces and rings. However unlike gold, silver has a lower value in terms of money. The presence of silver rarely occurs, however it is the most active of all the metals. You will know more about the properties of metals using a periodic table.

The third and unusual type of metal is mercury. It is the only metal that can be found on the earth which is purely liquid at a room temperature. Mercury has been noted to be the most dangerous type of all metals. The main process used to extract mercury is through distillation. It is also used during the extraction of gold because of its capacity to attract gold.

The last type of metal is iron. Iron became synonymous of metal for some individuals. It is because they thought that the main property of characteristics of metal is its hardness. Iron is the most useful and valuable type of metal. It is often used to create nails, construction equipments and railings. Iron is very versatile in terms of making things out of it because of its malleability. The history of metallurgy can be fully traced using the periodic table of elements. It will provide you the basic knowledge about how metals became useful to humans.

Power Tools History

Since the ancient Egyptians began using a hand-powered lathe centuries ago, man has striven to make arduous building and assembling tasks easier, quicker, and more efficient through power tools. We've come a long way from those sand-covered turning machines, but the end goal is no different from our desert-dwelling ancestors. Today, nearly every home in every industrialized country houses and uses power tools.

Metal Saw

Even though the concept of the power tool has been around for a long time, it wasn't until the late 1800's when the first modern-era power tools became possible. The advent of electric motors made highly-efficient stationary and portable power tool technology a reality, and high-speed assembly lines made power tools both affordable and profitable.

Metal Saw

The Bosch company was at the forefront of power tool technology in those early years. Founded in 1886 Germany by Robert Bosch, the company initially focused on automobile components with integrated electric parts, and was responsible for such developments as the first low-voltage magneto ignition. Before long, companies in other industrialized nations began developing the first electric power tools, and Bosch introduced its first power drill in 1932. Today, Bosch still engineers and manufactures automotive parts, and its power tool division has grown to include nearly every household and assembly tool on the market - including power drills, belt sanders, circular saws, and more. As part of the company's growth, it has acquired other successful power tool manufacturers that started during the same early 20th century era.

In 1923, American inventor Raymond DeWalt introduced the world's first radial arm saw, a sliding circular saw that could make long cuts with accuracy. One year later, he founded the DeWalt power tool company in Baltimore, Maryland; another company that has grown substantially over the last 85 years. At the forefront of portable power tool technology, DeWalt's power tools are revered by carpenters and homeowners alike for their long-life, durable cordless battery-styled power drill, circular saws, and other power tools; and the company currently manufactures over 200 types of power tools worldwide.

Founded in 1915 in Japan, the Makita Corporation has also staked its reputation on cordless, battery-powered power tools - most notably, the hand-held drill, which Makita introduced in 1978. Nine years later, the company had a full arsenal of cordless, professional-grade power tools for contractors. Today, Makita manufactures over 350 different power tools, both portable and stationary, and the pronounced teal color emblazoned on all of their tools is often mimicked by others trying to capitalize on Makita's reliable name.

The early 20th century proved to be a hotbed of power tool advancements, and many companies worked hard to develop profit-turning innovations that moved their products off store shelves and into people's homes. While the term power tool traditionally conjures thoughts of electric drills and sanders, machines like the pipe threader and utility pump are also considered power tools. This is the area the Ridgid company focused on when it was founded in Elyria, Ohio, in 1923. Still a leader in the plumbing tool industry, Ridgid now has a power tool division that focuses exclusively on contemporary power tools and has released its own saws, drills, and even air tools.

A.F. Siebert founded the Milwaukee Electric Tool Company one year later in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Known for manufacturing heavy-duty power tools, Milwaukee is best know for the 'Sawzall,' one of the most widely-used reciprocating saws in the world. Like their power tool manufacturing competition, Milwaukee currently produces portable and stationary power tools like circular saws, drills, band saws, grinders and sanders - over 500 different models in all. Unlike their competition, many of Milwaukee's power tools are released in both 120 and 230 volt models, drawing the line between household and commercial/industrial power.

Best known for the Skilsaw they invented in 1924, the Skil power tool company evolved out of the Michel Electric Handsaw Company when they entered the power tool market. Fueled by the ingenious circular saw invention, the company elevated itself to the upper echelon of the small power tool industry with jig saws, grinders, sanders, and a whole slew of handheld, cordless power tools. In 1996, the Bosch company purchased Skil but still keeps its power tools on shelves worldwide as one of the most popular power tool lines on Earth.

The Delta company has changed hands several times since it was founded by Herbert Tautz in 1919 in his Milwaukee, Wisconsin garage. Tautz focused on small tools but when Delta was purchased by Rockwell in 1945, the company made a profitable shift to the stationary tools - like planers and bench sanders - it's renowned for today. Delta isn't the only name this line has carried, however; Rockwell enveloped the company on takeover before selling it to Pentair, which re-introduced the Delta name before selling out to Black & Decker in 2004.

A veritable power tool power house, the Craftsman brand was coined by the Sears company in 1927. At first, the company primarily manufactured common hand tools like hammers and screwdrivers; but soon jumped on the power tool bandwagon and is now one of the top-selling producers of all power tools, both stationary and portable.

S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker founded the Black & Decker small machine shop in 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland; and the duo found their niche in the power tool industry by inventing the electric drill seven years later. The pistol-grip and trigger style drill became popular and is now a staple on construction sites and in households alike. Realizing the profit potential of power tools, Black & Decker has grown and acquired several other popular power tool brands, including DeWalt, Porter Cable, Delta, and Kwikset.

As industrialized nations become increasingly technology-driven, power tool production stands to increase as lightweight, powerful, and longer-lasting batteries try to match the power and reliability of corded power. Versatile contemporary models and thousands of accessories continue to make everything from woodworking to metal machining easier, more efficient, and more profitable for manufacturers, contractors, and homeowners alike. As power tools have become affordable for nearly everyone, only the hammer has resisted an electric redesign destined to change the way we work forever.

Saws for Cutting Wood

Whether you are a professional carpenter or a keen do-it-yourself woodwork enthusiast, you will need to have tools that you can use to cut the wood you are working with. While you might use an axe to cut trees and logs, the most common woodcutting tools are saws. These come in various guises and sizes, some of which are powered by electricity or batteries, and those that are much simpler hand tools.

Metal Saw

Hand tools for cutting wood
Even though most carpenters use electric or battery powered cordless saws, they always have a selection of good quality hand saws in their toolkit. A bow saw, which has a curved handle and an interchangeable blade that is fitted across one side, is large, even though the blade itself is narrow. It is an invaluable tool for rough cutting branches and logs. You can also use it to cut poles. A hack saw also has a narrow blade will give you a much finer cut than a bow saw. If you fit it with a metal cutting blade you can also use it to cut bolts and other parts. A tenon saw has a solid, rectangular blade that is not removable. This is one of the most useful saw types because it cuts accurately and can be used to cut housings and accurate joints. A panel saw also has a fitted blade, but it has a tapered appearance. It is very useful for cutting wood and for trimming posts and planks.

Metal Saw

Hand-held power tools for cutting wood
There are a large number of different brands of tools that you will find on the market, some cheaper than others. The decision of which brand to buy will depend on two factors. The first is of course budget, and the second function, depending on whether you are looking for a professional tool or just something that you will use from time to time in and around the house for various DIY projects. Just bear in mind that cheap tools don't last as long as better quality, more expensive one, and they don't always do a particularly good job cutting.

The two most popular power-saw types are the circular saw and the jigsaw. The former is indispensable, particularly if you are doing quite a lot of heavy woodwork. Look for a tool that has a good beveling capacity and is able to cut a variety of angles. Check the guard design to make sure it won't get in the way if you want to bevel edges or make thin, tapering shims. Some circular saws have a safety brake that will stop the blade from turning when you stop working.

Some of them do not cut perfect angles, which will only be a problem if you are doing accurate joinery, making furniture for example. A jigsaw is also useful for joinery, as well as for cutting quite intricate patterns and circles which other saw types are not able to do.

Another type of saw that can be useful is a chainsaw, which may be electric or petrol (or diesel) driven. It is most useful for cutting branches, logs and poles.

Workshop tools for cutting wood
Anyone who does a lot of woodwork or serious carpentry will usually invest in workshop tools which they mount onto a workbench. The most common are bench saws and radial saws. Professional models are generally larger than those used by the home handyman.

Different Types of Drill Press and Safety Tips Using the Drill Press

A drill press is a permanent style of drill that can be bolted onto the floor or mounted on a stand or workbench. It helps drill holes in wood, metal and a variety of other materials. The drill press produces accurate holes. Repetitive holes can be drilled in the same spot and at the same depth accurately and quickly.

Metal Saw

Speed can be adjusted via changing pulleys and belts. Drilling big holes usually requires a slower speed.

Metal Saw

A floor-standing drill press is more powerful and can be used with many kinds of materials. Bench-top drill press is a lot more compact. These two types of drill presses are the best for lighter and easier jobs.

Besides drilling holes, there are also different types of bits and attachments you may get to add versatility to the machine. This includes mortise bits, planer heads and standing drums.

Listed below are some types of drill press:

- Floor Model Drill Press - This drill press is the most loved type of drill that can be found in professional wood shops. It is equipped with longer columns and higher power motors. The column length of this floor drill presses are commonly 66'' to 72'' high. The advantage of this type of press is it allows you to handle larger work pieces because the table can actually run the full length of the column. The average price of this drill press ranges from 400 to 1,000 US dollars.

- Ryobi DP121l Drill Press - This is a type of 12-in bench top with multi-features. It has a dual laser type of guide, a 500-3000 RPM capability, a L.E.D work light, and speed readout. Speed can be changed just by moving a lever from the left housing, or adjusting the pulleys and belts. Average price 120 US dollars.

- 5 Speed Bench Drill Press - This is easy to use and can drill faster. The 5 spindle speed of this drill press is for drilling steel, wood, plastic or aluminum. It has a fully adjustable table with an angle indicator. The average amount of this drill press is 130 US dollars.

- Radial Drill Press - This drill press has an adjustable movable spindle. It is ideal on heavy work, where many holes are drilled.

Safety tips when using drill press:

- Always be alert or aware where you are putting your fingers to avoid accidents.
- Do not use bits that are bent, damaged or dull.
- Ensure the bit is centered in the chuck and tightened before operating the drill.
